7 Things That People Misjudge About Low Carb Diet

There are a lot of misconceptions about low-carb diets. Almost every "anti-low carb" information or news report says the same thing: reduced-carb diets don't have enough fruits and vegetables, and even often draw an image of people eating unhealthy diet.

The reality, low-carb diets concentrate on healthy food, nutritious, and research into reducing carbs continues to show more and more positive results.

Here are the misconceptions and the truths about low-carb diets to set your own mind at easiness and help you inform others.

1. Consuming Low Carb = Courting Heart Disease
In study after study, cholesterol, blood pressure, triglycerides, and other indications for heart disease risk decline on low-carb diets. Also, in one large long term study, even low-carb diets with a lot of animal protein and fat did not raise the risk of heart disease.

2. Eating Fruits and Vegetables not Allowed on Low-Carb Diets
People believe that fruits and vegetables are not allowed because they are mainly carbohydrate.
Actually, people who take a low carb diet almost all the time eat more fruits and vegetables than usual. Instead, non-starchy vegetables are actually comes at the bottom of the low carb pyramids.

3. Low-Carb Diets will Cause Kidneys Disease
The reason is that since people with kidney disease are typically encouraged to consume low protein diets, a diet that is higher in protein will raise kidney disease.
In fact, a low-carb diet is frequently not higher in protein than the latest suggested levels.

4. Low Carb means No Carb
Many people thought that a low carb diet must be extremely low in carbohydrates.
Not even a single expert endorses this. The fact, you should have at least 45% - 65% carbohydrate depending upon individual.

5. Dr Atkins Died of His Own Diet
Despite improperly obtained medical reports mis-reported by the vegetarian group "Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine", Dr Atkins died from head injuries resulting from a fall. He was not fat when he died

6. Low-Carb Diets Have Insufficient Fiber
The reason is, because fiber is carbohydrate, a low-carb diet must be low in fiber.
In fact, a lot of low-carb foods are high in fiber, and on diets that encourage carb counting, fiber doesn't come into the calculation. Fiber remains undigested, so it is encouraged on low-carb diets.

7. Low-Carb Diets will "Leach" All The Calcium from Your Bones
The reasoning goes that low-carb diets are always high in protein. People on higher protein diets are likely to have more calcium in their urine. But this turns out to be a red herring. This has been proven NOT to be true. In fact, it turns out that protein, rather than cause bone loss, actually protects our bones.

Worried about gaining weight by eating at the table?
Dad and I recently moved in with my grandmother. Both sides of my family are prone to weight problems and my mother's side is prone to bowel cancer so I have to watch my weight. The problem is that my grandmother insists in serving up full fat English food every night! She is th most stubborn person in the world. She refuses to buy a computer. She hates the diet food industry. She once said that the change in people's diets from empty fat and calorie loaded bread is destroying everybody. She's a hard line traditionalist. She is overweight by quite a margin, probably obese. My uncle Jason gained stacks of weight after eating from her table. Her husband, grandpa, died fom a pacemaker malfunction and he was VERY obese. I'm 21 by the way. I can't move out because I haven't found work yet :( At this rate I will have to eat veggies only or refuse to eat dinner at all. This will cause arguments. I know it will offend her but what else am I supposed to do? Talking to her about the issue will be pointless. She's stuck in her ways and as stubborn as an ox. HELP! The very thought if a gym membership fills me with horror. I don't have a license anyway and the buses don't run at night. I would not be seen DEAD in trackies! Making excuses not to eat will not work. She's not that stupid. I HATE the very thought of exercise! I might consider a dance class but that's it.

Needs tips for a healthy, basic diet (to lose weight)?
Hi, I've never dieted before, but I'm 24 now, and I've noticed I can't eat whatever I want and not exercise and stay the same exact weight anymore. I'm looking to lose a few pounds. I am excerising now. Mostly just long walks and bike rides. I'm also on strong medication that makes food pretty unappetizing. So I feel like I'm kinda cheating--its not hard to resist food. But I know if I dont eat, or dont eat right, I'm going to lose weight in the wrong way and it could mess up my whole body and I'll just gain it back once I'm off the meds. But I don't know what to eat? Sounds stupid but really, what is good, nutritious diet food? I eat fruit for breakfast. But lunch? Dinner? I mean should I stick to salads and stuff? Grains? Meat? (yuck). If anyone could give me some good meal plan ideas/tips, or cooking advice, that would be great.

steroid injections for cats (please read)?
Last Tuesday i took my cat to the vets for a skin complaint that has gone on for some time now with my cat licking and chewing at his body and rubbing his face and scratching his neck allot sometimes until he bleeds. For the past few months mainly his stomach and scratching his neck and face though sometimes he has periods when he doesn't do this as much then he will start up again. The vet suggested to rule out flea allergies i should carry on using the fleas treatment i'm already using and told me to De-flea the house with flea spray which i did a few days after seeing the vet. He also suggested i change his food to Burns dry food (chicken or the white fish) He said i could choose which one to give my cat. He said if i give the chicken food i could boil some chicken for him and vice verca for the white fish option. He suggested to try the burns food before trying the more expensive vet diet food. He also talked about it being a possible behavior problem. He then gave him a steroid injection which he told me would last between 7-10 days. It has worn off now so that was pretty accurate. I asked the vet if i needed to bring him back and he said if he starts licking and biting again then i could bring him in for another shot, however because i've just started the burns food and i don't want to keep giving him the injections every other week if i can help it i'm probably not going to see the vet again for a few weeks so i was wondering if anyone had any knowledge of steroid injection used on cats. What i'm wondering is if the steroid injections work which they do does that mean the problem my cat has is most likely to be allergy related rather than a behavior problem? I was going to ask the vet this but he told me to keep him on the Burns food for 8-12 weeks so i'm going to try not to go back before this time unless my cat really needs to that is. Thanks in advance. I don't know what kind of steroid was in the injection but the vet did say there were different longer lasting injections he could give my cat but was only going to give him the short period one as he didn't want to go down that root just yet. He was basically saying that he wanted to try to find the cause of my cats problems before resorting to permanent steroid injections as my cat is still quit young (4 this year). I've used different flea applications on my cat and nothing has worked, i use advantage at the moment, i've used stronghold spot on and advocate spot on. I've had periods where i've kept him inside still using the flea treatment and periods where i have stopped using the flea treatment and nothing seems to work. No pattern i can see when he does have the odd week or two where he settles down anyway. These periods are few and far between. The vet also suggested i keep a diary and see if i notice and changes and try to pin point anything from doing
